A growing number of tourists are seeking out more usual places to stay on the popular holiday island of Lanzarote. As they seek to trade the main resorts and more conventional apartments and villas. And they are best advised to head for the north of Lanzarote - as here the landscapes remain pretty much untouched by large scale tourist development and there are also some more unusual accommodation options available such as Finca de Arrieta, a former farm which now runs along ecologically friendly lines. And where tourists can book a stay in a yurt - the favoured accommodation of Mongolian yak herder's!

The aptly named Valley of 1000 Palms is situated just ten minutes drive from Arrieta and is widely regarded as one of Lanzarote´s most stunning beauty spots. The verdant scenery here resembles an African oasis - as thousands of palms sway to and fro gently in the breeze.

Anyone seeking somewhere to stay here is best advised to book a break at the Finca La Crucita, which boasts a great garden and swimming pool area and cool chill out zone. As well as eight separate villas - each of which is named after a village on Lanzarote.

There are still many holidaymakers though who prefer the conventional resorts - and there are also plenty of holiday properties for them to select from here too. Playa Blanca villas have long been a hot favourite with those in search of some serious sunshine, as they can be found right at the southern end of the island, enjoying the hottest weather. And Puerto del Carmen villas are always booked up well in advance thanks to the fact that this is the most popular holiday resorts on Lanzarote. Having welcomed the first tourists to the Canaries back in the 1970´s.

Regardless of your final choice of destination Lanzarote remains a very unspoilt island in comparison with some other Spanish holiday destinations such as the Costas and Balearics.

This can be attributed to local planning laws which prohibit any development that is taller than one of the local palm trees.
