Holiday planning is well underway for most households and as usual all the popular tourist destinations will be vying to attract the lions share of visitors to boost local economies that have not been so buoyant for the last few years. Lanzarote however has faired better than some other holiday destinations so what keeps visitors returning to this popular destination and what is one of the best places to stay?

This popular holiday island located in the Atlantic Ocean close to the coast of Africa and forms part of the Canary Island chain, which is an autonomous region of Spain - even though it is actually located many hundreds of miles south of the Iberian Peninsula.

The seven islands that make up the Canaries are segregated into two main areas. The western Canaries - which revolve around the main island of Tenerife and which also include El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma. And the eastern Canaries - which are governed from Gran Canaria and which also encompasses Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

However despite being all part of one single autonomous region these islands are in fact all very different. Lanzarote for example is undoubtedly very much drier and more barren than the other islands in the archipelago. This is the result of very low rainfall and a desert climate - which could be little surprise as the outer reaches of what was once the Spanish Sahara are just 100 miles or so away. So the weather is without a doubt very warm here but can still feel a little chilly once the sun has finally set for the day.

This arid and rather denuded feel has been exacerbated further by volcanic activity. As a few hundreds of years ago the island was rocked by enormous eruptions which wiped out many of the islands farms and villages. Leaving barren lava fields in its wake. This resulted in only the north of the island being home too much in the way of greenery and trees specifically in and around the Valley of 1000 Palms.

Local tourist authorities estimate that around half of all visitors book hotels in Lanzarote. With hundreds to choose from across the island - offering all types of tariffs from room only to all inclusive. The remaining visitors are largely made up of independent travellers who prefer renting private rental accommodation, such as Lanzarote villas or apartments.

One of the most popular destinations on the island is probably Playa Blanca, particularly during the winter months, as it is located at the southern end of the island and subsequently enjoys the best climate as a result. Temperatures here are higher and Playa Blanca enjoys more sunshine hours than resorts to the north.

There are plenty of places to stay in this fast growing resort too. With an ample selection of villas that can be found for rental along with a quantity of good value four star hotels. Playa Blanca is actually also located just a short distance from some of Lanzarote´s leading tourist attractions - such as the Montañas del Fuego, or Fire Mountains, of the Timanfaya National Park. And the famous Green Lagoon at El Golfo.

As a result accommodation is often very much in demand - especially during the winter season and the months of December and January. In addition to the tourist attractions around the area the resort also offers wonderful beaches, such as the fine stretches of sand at Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo. Whilst the awe inspiring sight of the Lanzarote´s 300 plus volcanoes are just a short ten minute drive away.

So if you are looking for holiday ideas this season Lanzarote will be a destination that rarely if ever disappoints and Playa Blanca is ideally situated especially if renting a private villa as this enables you to make the most of your holiday and enjoy the outstanding natural beauty of the area.
